Picky Eaters Holiday Workshop

  • Pediatric Interactions 649 Barron Boulevard Grayslake, IL, 60030 United States (map)

Do you have a child who refuses to eat anything new or only wants to stick to their favorite foods? You’re not alone! Picky eating is a common challenge for many families. Holidays are tough. There's more pressure to enjoy meals together. There are ways to make these times less stressful and more enjoyable for everyone.

This workshop is for families with their child so we can explore new ways of introducing foods.

Why is my child a picky eater?

Picky eating can come from many factors. These include your child's age and developmental stage. Toddlers between 1 and 3 years old may go through a "phase" as they are becoming more independent. But having a meltdown over a new food isn't typical. Sensory sensitivities and anxiety about unfamiliar foods can lead to this. Underlying medical issues or how the muscles in the mouth are working may also impact eating. We can help you understand your child's root cause and help address the issue in a more effective way.

How can I encourage my child to try new foods?

Introducing new foods in a relaxed, pressure-free environment can be key. Encourage exploration of foods by touching or smelling, rather than "tasting". Introducing foods in play, shopping, and cooking can spark curiosity about different ingredients.

Will the holidays always be a struggle?

Not necessarily! The right tools and strategies can improve holidays and all meals for everyone. Set realistic expectations and celebrate small wins. For example, your child sitting at the table or tasting something new.

How can our class help?

"From Toast to Turkey" is our upcoming class. Our speech/language pathologists designed it for families who are managing picky eaters. Our class starts with a mealtime routine you can use throughout the year to make coming to the table easier. Therapists will present kids with foods selected to encourage exploration. We will model strategies to encourage your child to try new foods. We'll also offer advice to make holidays and daily meals more enjoyable.

Join us to learn how to make mealtimes a time of connection, not stress. Help your child build a healthier relationship with food.
